Community helps shape the future of the Hopetoun Sporting Precinct
The future of the Hopetoun Sporting Precinct is being shaped with the community, as the Shire of Ravensthorpe works to identify which improvements should be prioritised in the next phase of planning.
Residents, sporting clubs, community organisations and precinct users were invited to take part in a community workshop at the Hopetoun Sporting Precinct on Wednesday 12 August. The consultation provided an opportunity to revisit the long-term vision for the site and discuss which projects are most important to the people who use the precinct.
The workshop follows the development of the Hopetoun Sporting Precinct Concept Plan, which was prepared as part of the Shire's broader Sport and Recreation Master Plan work. The 2022 Master Plan identified redevelopment of the precinct as a priority and specifically recommended community consultation and stakeholder engagement to guide its future development.
The precinct is an important community hub supporting football, cricket, hockey, tennis, netball, bowls, skating and a range of other recreational and community activities. The long-term concept identified opportunities to renew ageing facilities, improve accessibility and provide better facilities for women, juniors, volunteers, spectators and community events.
Ideas identified through the concept planning process include a new accessible multi-use sporting pavilion, indoor netball and basketball courts, improvements to changerooms, toilets, first-aid, storage, kitchen and spectator facilities, and upgrades to the oval, hockey pitch, bowling facilities, cricket infrastructure, courts and lighting.
The concept also looks beyond organised sport, with opportunities for playgrounds, a pump track, improved skate facilities, fitness areas, pedestrian connections and other spaces that encourage informal recreation and make the precinct more welcoming for children, young people and families.
Community feedback continues to reinforce the importance of sport and recreation facilities in Hopetoun. The Shire's 2026 Community Scorecard identified calls for improvements to the sporting precinct, playing surfaces, club facilities, playgrounds, basketball courts and spectator amenities, with residents highlighting the role the precinct plays for sporting clubs, schools, families and the broader community.
The latest consultation is an important step in turning the long-term vision into a practical set of priorities.
While the concept plan identifies a broad range of potential improvements, it is not a commitment to deliver every project at once. Updated costing prepared in July 2026 is for indicative budgeting purposes, with the project documentation noting that detailed budgets and further professional input would be required before any financial commitment is made.
Feedback from the community consultation will help the Shire understand which facilities and improvements should receive the greatest priority and inform future planning, staging and funding opportunities.
By working with the people who use the precinct, the Shire aims to ensure future investment responds to local needs and supports a sporting and recreation hub that can serve Hopetoun for many years to come.
